Pope leads the way

I write this piece hastily while waiting in Bush Airport for a plane to Boston to make my annual spiritual retreat there.  It’s currently 90 degrees in Houston and 9 degrees in Boston, so a coat, scarf, and hat are all packed (once I found it). Because of the travel and cold weather I wasn’t particularly thrilled about a silent retreat this season, right in the middle of Lenten activities, especially so many confessions, but we go when we are needed to go, so there I go. I’m trying to reframe my attitude by viewing it as an opportunity to follow Pope Leo, who just made his retreat last week in Rome. The preacher for his retreat, Bishop Eric Vardan, has posted his meditations on his website (Retreat Meditations) so I’ll be sure to check those out. The bottom line is that all priests by canon law must make a spiritual retreat once a year, but, of course, many Catholics follow a regular retreat plan as well. It’s a good, nay, a great investment of energy, time, and money; and while it’s hard to miss events and people at home, these sacrifices can become the foundation for a retreat that benefits everyone. No news from me for the next week is good news… God bless!

Angel Eyes could have used a good retreat…
