The philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre wrote his diagnostic masterpiece After Virtue in 1981, arguing that the West had lost ethical coherence, evoking a need to rebuild the metaphysical grounding of culture. Of course, what is ultimately needed after (or beyond) human habits and virtue (and even metaphysics) is God’s mercy and grace. I met MacIntyre once, and I’ll never forget it. I told him I had read After Virtue and that I enjoyed it…to which he chuckled and said, “It’s a book that should be read every year!” That’s real humility, because he’s probably right. Anyway, enjoy the book and the music… If you catch the After Virtue Band sometime, you can sing along with its covers and original music. We’re after virtue…are you?
Christmas Carols!
Below is a short collection of Christmas carols in alphabetical order (they’re also some of my favorites):
Angels came to say (G)
Gabriel was an angel from Heaven, according to Luke 1, verse 27. All the waiting finally ending. God became man, and the world started mending. Angels came to say, “Put your fears away.” Angels came to say, “Put your fears away.”
Joseph loved his wife and his nation. He took Mary home, risking his good reputation. Words in a dream gave him insight. Revelation guides them day and night. Angels came to say, “Put your fears away.” Angels came to say, “Put your fears away.”
Shepherds rarely see anything shocking, but the fields tonight are really rocking. Angels light up the sky with their song. Gloria in excelsis Deo! all night long. Angels came to say, “Put your fears away.” Angels came to say, “Put your fears away.”
Angels we have heard on high (Dc2)
Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o’er the plains, and the mountains in reply echoing their joyous strains… Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be, which inspire your heavenly song? Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing. Come, adore on bended knee, Christ the Lord, the newborn King… Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
See Him in a manger laid, Jesus Lord of heaven and earth! Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, and with us sing our Savior’s birth… Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Away in a manger (Dc2)
Away in a manger, no crib for His bed, the little Lord Jesus, laid down His sweet head. The stars in the sky, looked down where He lay, the little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the poor Baby wakes, but little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky, and stay by my side, ’til morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay, close by me forever, and love me I pray. Bless all the dear children, in Thy tender care, and take us to heaven, to live with Thee there.
Campanas de Belén (D)
Campana sobre campana y sobre campana una. Asómate a la ventana y verás al Niño en la cuna. Belén, campanas de Belén, que los ángeles tocan que nuevas nos traen!
Recogío tu rebaño ¿Y a dónde va tu pastorcillo? Voy llevando al portal de queso, manteca y vino. Belén, campanas de Belén, que los ángeles tocan que nuevas nos traen!
Belén, campanas de Belén, que los ángeles tocan que nuevas nos traen!
Deck the halls (C)
Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Tis the season to be jolly, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Don we now our gay apparel, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Troll the ancient Yuletide carol, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.
See the blazing Yule before us. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Strike the harp and join the chorus. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Follow me in merry measure. Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la. While I tell of Yuletide treasure. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.
Fast away the old year passes. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Hail the new ye lads and lasses. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Sing we joyous all together. Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la. Heedless of the wind and weather. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.
Feliz Navidad (C)
Feliz Navidad. Feliz Navidad. Feliz Navidad, próspero año y felicidad. Feliz Navidad. Feliz Navidad. Feliz Navidad, próspero año y felicidad.
I wanna wish you a merry Christmas. I wanna wish you a merry Christmas. I wanna wish you a merry Christmas, from the bottom of my heart.
I wanna wish you a merry Christmas. I wanna wish you a merry Christmas. I wanna wish you a merry Christmas, from the bottom of my heart.

I wanna wish you a merry Christmas. I wanna wish you a merry Christmas. I wanna wish you a merry Christmas, from the bottom of my heart!
First Noel (D)
The First Noel, the Angels did say, was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay. In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel. Born is the King of Israel!Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel. Born is the King of Israel!
They looked up and saw a star shining in the East beyond them far. And to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel. Born is the King of Israel! Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel. Born is the King of Israel!
Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad, prospero año y felicedad. Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad, prospero año y felicedad. I want to wish you a Merry Christmas, I want to wish you a Merry Christmas. I want to wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart. I want to wish you a Merry Christmas, I want to wish you a Merry Christmas. I want to wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel. Born is the King of Israel
First NoeThe first noel the Angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay.
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Noel, noel, noel, noel. Born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star shining in the East, beyond them far. And to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued, both day and night. Noel, noel, noel, noel. Born is the King of Israel. And by the light of that same star Three Wise Men came from country far to seek for a King was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. Noel, noel, noel, noel. Born is the King of Israel. This Star drew nigh to the North West, over Bethlehem it took its rest. And there it did both stop and stay, right over the place where Jesus lay. Noel, noel, noel, noel. Born is the King of Israel. Then did they know assuredly within that house, the King did lie. One entered in then for to see, and found the babe in poverty. Noel, noel, noel, noel. Born is the King of Israel. Then entered in those Wise Men three, fell reverently upon bended knee, and offer’d there, in his presence, their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense. Noel, noel, noel, noel. Born is the King of Israel. Between an ox stall and an ass, this Child truly there he was; for want of clothing they did him lay all in a manger, among the hay. Noel, noel, noel, noel. Born is the King of Israel. Then let us all with one accord
sing praises to our heavenly Lord, that hath made heaven and earth of nought, and with his blood mankind hath bought. Noel, noel, noel, noel. Born is the King of Israel. If we in our time shall do well we shall be free from death and Hell. For God hath prepared for us all a resting place in general. Noel, noel, noel, noel. Born is the King of Israel.God rest ye merry gentlemen
God rest ye merry gentlemen (Dmc5)
God rest ye merry, gentlemen (Dm)
God rest ye merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay. Remember Christ our Savior was born on Christmas day, to save us all from Satan’s power when we were gone astray. O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy! O tidings of comfort and joy!
From God our heavenly Father a blessed angel came. And unto certain shepherds brought tidings of the same. How that in Bethlehem was born the Son of God by name. O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy! O tidings of comfort and joy!
The shepherds at those tidings rejoiced much in mind. And left their flocks a-feeding in tempest, storm, and wind. And went to Bethlehem straightway this blessed babe to find. O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy! O tidings of comfort and joy!
But when to Bethlehem they came, whereat this infant lay, they found him in a manger, where oxen feed on hay. His mother Mary kneeling, unto the Lord did pray. O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy! O tidings of comfort and joy!
Now to the Lord sing praises, all you within this place. And with true love and brotherhood each other now embrace. This holy tide of Christmas all others doth deface. O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy! O tidings of comfort and joy!
Jingle bells (GorFc3)
Dashing through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh, over the fields we go, laughing all the way. Bells on bob-tail ring, making spirits bright. What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh.
A day or two ago, I thought I’d take a ride, and soon Miss Fanny Bright was seated by my side. The horse was lean and lank, misfortune seemed his lot. He got into a drifted bank, and we, we got upshot. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh.
A day or two ago, the story I must tell… I went out on the snow and on my back I fell. A gent was riding by in a one-horse open sleigh. He laughed as there I sprawling lie, but quickly drove away. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh.
Now the ground is white, go it while you’re young. Take the girls tonight, and sing this sleighing song. Just get a bob-tailed bay, two-forty as his speed. Hitch him to an open sleigh, and crack! you’ll take the lead! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh.
Joy to the world (C)
Joy to the world! The Lord is come. Let earth receive her King. Let every heart prepare Him room; and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and heaven and nature sing!
Joy to the world, the Savior reigns. Let men their songs employ. While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy!
No more let sin and sorrows grow, nor thorns infest the ground. He comes to make His blessings flow, far as the curse is found, far as the curse is found, far as, far as the curse is found.
He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of His righteousness, and wonders of His love, and wonders of His love, and wonders, wonders of His love.
O Come All Ye Faithful (G)
O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant. Come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem. Come and behold Him, born the King of angels. O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!
Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation. Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God, all glory in the highest. O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!
True God of true God, Light from Light Eternal. Lo, he shuns not the Virgin’s womb. Son of the Father, begotten, not created. O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!
Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, born this happy morning. Jesus, to Thee be all glory given. Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing. O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!
Adeste Fideles laeti triumphantes. Veníte, veníte in Bethlehem. Natum vidéte, Regem Angelorum. Veníte adoremus, veníte adoremus, veníte adoremus Dóminum!
O Holy night (Ac2)
O holy night, the stars are brightly shining. It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, till He appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary soul rejoices. For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees; O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born. O night divine, O holy night, O night divine.
Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming, with glowing hearts by His cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming. Here come the wise men from Orient land. The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger. In all our trials born to be our friend. Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born! O night divine, O holy night, O night divine.
Silent night (G)
Silent night, holy night. All is calm, all is bright. Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant so tender and mild. Sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night. Shepherds quake at the sight. Glories stream from heaven afar. Heavenly hosts sing alleluia. Christ the Savior, is born! Christ the Savior, is born!
Silent night, holy night. Son of God, love’s pure light. Radiant beams from thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace. Jesus, Lord, at thy birth. Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
What child is this? (Em)
What Child is this who, laid to rest on Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and Angels sing. Haste, haste, to bring Him laud, the Babe, the Son of Mary.
Why lies He in such mean estate, where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christians, fear, for sinners here the silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear shall pierce Him through, the cross be borne for me, for you. Hail, hail the Word made flesh, the Babe, the Son of Mary.
So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh. Come peasant, king to own Him. The King of kings salvation brings; let loving hearts enthrone Him. Raise, raise a song on high. The virgin sings her lullaby. Joy, joy for Christ is born, the Babe, the Son of Mary.

Popular classics!
Below are some classic country, pop, and rock songs that are pretty easy to play and sing-along with. What could possibly go wrong? (still in progress)
All I really wanna do (Dylan)
I ain’t lookin’ to compete with you; beat or cheat or mistreat you; simplify you, classify you; deny, defy or crucify you. All I really want to do, is baby, be friends with you
No, and I ain’t lookin’ to fight with you; frighten you or up-tighten you; drag you down or drain you down; chain you down; or bring you down. All I really want to do, is, baby, be friends with you
I ain’t lookin’ to block you up; shock or knock or lock you up; analyze you, categorize you; finalize you or advertise you. All I really want to do, is baby, be friends with you
I don’t want to straight-face you; race or chase you, track or trace you; or disgrace you or displace you; or define you or confine you. All I really want to do, is baby, be friends with you
I don’t want to meet your kin; make you spin or do you in; or select you or dissect you; or inspect you or reject you. All I really want to do, is baby, be friends with you
I don’t want to fake you out; take or shake or forsake you out; I ain’t lookin’ for you to feel like me; see like me or be like me. All I really want to do, is baby, be friends with you
Baba O’Reiley (Townshend)
Out here in the fields I fight for my meals. I get my back into my living. I don’t need to fight to prove I’m right. ‘Cause we all need to be forgiven, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Don’t cry; don’t raise your eye. It’s only teenage wasteland.
Teenage wasteland. It’s only teenage wasteland. Teenage wasteland; oh yeah, it’s only teenage wasteland. They’re all wasted!
Sally take my hand. We’ll travel south cross land. Put out the fire, and don’t look past my shoulder. The exodus is here. The happy ones are near. Let’s get together, before we get much older.
Can’t help falling in love with you (Weiss)
Wise men say only fools rush in. But I can’t help falling in love with you. Shall I stay? Would it be a sin, if I can’t help falling in love with you?
Like a river flows surely to the sea, darling, so it goes. Some things are meant to be.
Take my hand. Take my whole life, too. For I can’t help falling in love with you.
Like a river flows surely to the sea, darling, so it goes. Some things are meant to be.
Take my hand. Take my whole life, too. For I can’t help falling in love with you.
Clay pigeons (Foley)
I’m going down to the greyhound station. Gonna get a ticket to ride. Gonna find that lady with 2 or 3 kids and sit down by her side. Gonna ride until the sun comes up and down around me about 2 or 3 times, smoking cigarettes in the last seat; trying to hide my sorrow from the people I meet, and get along with it all. Go down where people say ya’ll. Sing a song with a friend. Change the shape that I’m in, and get back in the game, and start playing again.
I’d like to stay but I might have to go to start over again. I might go back down to Texas; I might go somewhere that I’ve never been. And get up in the morning and go out at night, and I won’t have to go home. Get used to being alone. Change the words to this song, and start singing again.
I’m tired of running round looking for answers to questions that I already know. I could build me a castle of memories just to have somewhere to go. Count the days and the nights that it takes to get back in the saddle again. Feed the pigeons some clay. Turn the night into day. Start talking again if I know what to say.

Country roads (Denver)
Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River. Life is old there, older than the trees. Younger than the mountains, growin’ like a breeze.
Country roads, take me home, to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain mama, take me home, country roads.
All my memories gather ’round her. Miner’s lady, stranger to blue water. Dark and dusty, painted on the sky. Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye
Country roads, take me home, to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain mama, take me home, country roads.
I hear her voice in the mornin’ hour, she calls me. The radio reminds me of my home far away. Drivin’ down the road, I get a feelin’ that I should’ve been home yesterday, yesterday…
Country roads, take me home, to the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain mama, take me home, country roads.
Take me home, (down) country roads
Take me home, (down) country roads
Down the aisle
And I wonder if you really love me. And I wonder if you really care. But I don’t expect an answer. And I’m not a necromancer. And you’ve always been a dancer at the fair.
And I wonder when you started laughing. And I wonder why you looked away. But my mind is tarnished, and all my memories varnished. But our horses are still harnessed; we ride today.
And I wonder if you hear me singing. And I wonder if you cracked a smile. But this song is ending, and my peer review is pending about the message I am sending down the aisle.
Eres tu (Calderon)
Everyday (Holly)
Everyday it’s a gettin’ closer, goin’ faster than a roller coaster. Love like yours will surely come my way. A hey, a hey, hey…
Everyday it’s a gettin’ faster. Everyone says go ahead and ask her. Love like yours will surely come my way. A hey, a hey hey…
Everyday seems a little longer. Every way love’s a little stronger. Come what may, do you ever long for true love from me?
Everyday it’s a gettin’ closer, goin’ faster than a roller coaster. Love like yours will surely come my way. A hey, a hey hey… Love like yours will surely come my way.
Free-falling (Petty)
She’s a good girl, loves her mama. Loves Jesus and America too. She’s a good girl, crazy ’bout Elvis. Loves horses and her boyfriend too.
It’s a long day livin’ in Reseda. There’s a freeway runnin’ through the yard. And I’m a bad boy, ’cause I don’t even miss her.I’m a bad boy for breakin’ her heart.
And I’m free, I’m free fallin’…
All the vampires walkin’ through the valley move west down Ventura Boulevard. And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows. All the good girls are home with broken hearts.
And I’m free, I’m free-fallin’…
I wanna glide down over Mulholland. I wanna write her name in the sky. I wanna free fall out into nothin’. Gonna leave this world for a while.
And I’m free, I’m free-fallin’…
The Gambler (Schlitz)
On a warm summer evening, on a train bound for nowhere, I met up with a gambler, we were both too tired to sleep. So we took turns starin’ out the window in the darkness until boredom overtook us, and he began to speak.
He said, “Son I’ve made my life out of readin’ people’s faces, knowing what the cards were by the way they held their eyes. And if you don’t mind me saying, I can see you’re out of aces, and for a taste of your whiskey I’ll give you some advice.”
So I handed him my bottle, and he took down my last swallow. Then he bummed a cigarette, and asked me for a light. And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression. He said, “If you’re gonna play the game boy, you gotta learn to play it right.”
You gotta know when to hold them, know when to fold them, know when to walk away, and know when to run. You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table. There’ll be time enough for counting when the dealin’s done.
Now every gambler knows that the secret to survival is knowin’ what to throw away and knowing what to keep. ‘Cause every hand’s a winner, and every hand’s a loser. And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep. And when he finished speaking, he turned back to the window, crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep. And somewhere in the darkness the gambler he broke even. And in his final words I found an ace that I could keep.
You gotta know when to hold them, know when to fold them, know when to walk away, and know when to run. You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table. There’ll be time enough for counting when the dealin’s done.
Good riddance (Armstrong)
Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road. Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go. So make the best of this test and don’t ask why. It’s not a question but a lesson learned in time. It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right. I hope you had the time of your life.
So take the photographs and still-frames in your mind. Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time. Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial. For what it’s worth it was worth all the while. It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right. I hope you had the time of your life.
It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right. I hope you had the time of your life.
Home sweet exile
Traveling at the speed of sound. Trying not to touch the ground. And remember all I found. All the memories, all around.
It’s a home sweet exile. Home sweet exile. Home again… Home again for just a while.
Mama says you gotta a choice to make. About your life, for heaven’s sake, better listen to what the Lord Jesus say. And there’s hope for us, on Judgement Day
It’s a home sweet exile. Home sweet exile. Home again… Home again for just a while.
The sound barrier is broken. And all the prophets have spoken.
It’s a home sweet exile. Home sweet exile. Home again… Home again for just a while.
I saw the light (Williams)
I wandered so aimless, life filled with sin; I wouldn’t let my Dear Savior in. Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night. Praise the Lord, I saw the light!
I saw the light, I saw the light. No more darkness, no more night. Now I’m so happy, no sorrow in sight. Praise the Lord, I saw the light!
Just like a blind man I wandered along; worries and fears I claimed for my own. Then like the blind man that God gave back his sight…praise the Lord, I saw the light! (Chorus)
I was a fool to wander and stray. Straight is the gate and narrow the way. Now I have traded the wrong for the right. Praise the Lord, I saw the light!
I saw the light, I saw the light. No more darkness, no more night. Now I’m so happy, no sorrow in sight. Praise the Lord, I saw the light!
I’m a believer (Diamond)
I thought love was only true in fairy tales, meant for someone else but not for me. Love was out to get me; that’s the way it seemed. Disappointment haunted all my dreams.
But then I saw her face; now I’m a believer. Not a trace of doubt in my mind. I’m in love; I’m a believer. I couldn’t leave her if I tried.
I thought love was more or less a giving thing. Seems the more I gave the less I got. What’s the use in tryin’? All you get is pain. When I needed sunshine I got rain.
But then I saw her face; now I’m a believer. Not a trace of doubt in my mind. I’m in love; I’m a believer. I couldn’t leave her if I tried.
…Love was out to get me; that’s the way it seemed. Disappointment haunted all my dreams.
But then I saw her face; now I’m a believer. Not a trace of doubt in my mind. I’m in love; I’m a believer. I couldn’t leave her if I tried.
Keep on the sunny side (Carter)
There’s a dark and a troubled side of life. There’s a bright and a sunny side too. Though we meet with the darkness and strife, the sunny side we also may view.
(Chorus) Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side. Keep on the sunny side of life. It will help us every day, it will brighten all the way, if we keep on the sunny side of life.
Oh, the storm and its fury broke today. Crushing hopes that we cherish so dear. Clouds and storms will in time pass away. The sun again will shine bright and clear. (Chorus)
Let us greet with a song of hope each day. Though the moments be cloudy or fair. Let us trust in our Saviour always. He’ll keep us, every one, in His care. (Chorus)
Kids are alright (Townshend)
I don’t mind other guys dancing with my girl. That’s fine; I know them all pretty well. But I know sometimes I must get out in the light. Better leave her behind with the kids, they’re alright. The kids are alright.
Sometimes I feel I got to get away. Bells chime; I know I got to get away. And I know if I don’t, I’ll go out of my mind. Better leave her behind with the kids, they’re alright. The kids are alright.
I know if I go things will be a lot better for her. I had things planned, but her folks wouldn’t let her.
Sometimes I feel I got to get away. Bells chime; I know I got to get away. And I know if I don’t, I’ll go out of my mind. Better leave her behind with the kids, they’re alright. The kids are alright.
King of the road (Miller)
Trailer’s for sale or rent. Rooms to let, 50 cents. No phone, no pool, no pets. I ain’t got no cigarettes.
Ah, but, two hours of pushin’ broom buys an eight by twelve four-bit room. I’m a man of means by no means… King of the road.
Third boxcar, midnight train. Destination Bangor, Maine. Old, worn out suit and shoes. I don’t pay no union dues.
I smoke old stogies I have found. Short, but not too big around. I’m a man of means by no means… King of the road.
I know every engineer on every train. All of their children, and all of their names. And every handout in every town. And every lock that ain’t locked, when no one’s around.
Ah, but, two hours of pushin’ broom buys an eight by twelve four-bit room. I’m a man of means by no means… King of the road. I’m a King of the road.

Lion sleeps tonight (Tokens)
In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight. In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the Lion sleeps tonight… Wee-oh mumbaweh!
Hush my darling, don’t fear my darling, the lion sleeps tonight. Hush my darling, don’t fear my darling, the lion sleeps tonight. Wee-oh mumbaweh!
In the village, the peaceful village, the lion sleeps tonight. In the village, the peaceful village, the lion sleeps tonight. Wee-oh mumbaweh!
Love hurts (Bryant)
Love hurts, love scars, love wounds and marks any heart not tough or strong enough to take a lot of pain, take a lot of pain. Love is like a cloud; holds a lot of rain. Love hurts. Ooh, ooh, love hurts…
I’m young, I know, but even so, I know a thing or two I learned from you. I really learned a lot, really learned a lot. Love is like a flame; it burns you when it’s hot. Love hurts. Ooh, ooh, love hurts…
Some fools think of happiness, blissfulness, togetherness. Some fools fool themselves, I guess, but they’re not foolin’ me.
I know it isn’t true. I know it isn’t true. Love is just a lie, made to make you blue. Love hurts. Ooh, ooh, love hurts. Ooh, ooh, love hurts…
I know it isn’t true. I know it isn’t true. Love is just a lie, made to make you blue. Love hurts. Ooh, ooh, love hurts. Ooh, ooh, love hurts…
Love is a rose (Young)
Love is a rose, but you better not pick it. It only grows when it’s on the vine. A handful of thorns and you’ll know you’ve missed it. You lose your love when you say the word “mine”.
(Chorus) I wanna see what’s never been seen. I wanna live that age old dream. Come on, girl, we can go together. Let’s take the best right now. Take the best right now.
I wanna go to an old hoe-down, long ago in a western town. Pick me up, cause my feet are draggin’. Give me a lift and I’ll hay your wagon. (Chorus)
Love is a rose. Love is a rose. Love is a rose. Love is a rose.
Low-octane love
Low-octane love is ruining my heart. With low octane love it won’t start. I search for a lover, but my heart won’t turn over; it’s filled up with low-octane love.
My truck is filled with gasoline, but my heart needs another thing. A woman who knows how love’s supposed to go. And keeps me running clean.
Low-octane love is ruining my heart. With low octane love it won’t start. I search for a lover, but my heart won’t turn over; it’s filled up with low-octane love.
The National Enquirer attracts you more than my face at the convenience store. Lottery tickets and coffee espresso are making my life a big mess, Oh…
Low-octane love is ruining my heart. With low octane love it won’t start. I search for a lover, but my heart won’t turn over; it’s filled up with low-octane love. It’s filled up with low-octane love.
Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys (Bruce)
Cowboys ain’t easy to love and they’re harder to hold. They’d rather give you a song than diamonds or gold. Lonestar belt buckles and old faded Levi’s, and each night begins a new day.
If you don’t understand him, and he don’t die young, he’ll probably just ride away.
Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys. Don’t let ’em pick guitars or drive them old trucks. Let ’em be doctors and lawyers and such. Mamas don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys. ‘Cause they’ll never stay home, and they’re always alone, even with someone they love.
Cowboys like smokey old pool rooms and clear mountain mornings. Little warm puppies, and children and girls of the night. Them that don’t know him won’t like him, and them that do, sometimes won’t know how to take him. He ain’t wrong, he’s just different, but his pride won’t let him do things to make you think he’s right.
Nomadic life
I hear the bulldozers coming. I feel their engines are humming. I see the neighbors all start running. Wandering free… Stars, and traffic lights and me. Oh, say can you see? The nomadic life’s for me!
My friends all say it’s a pity. The fact I got to leave the city. Get out of Dodge and forget Miss Kitty. Wandering free… Stars, and traffic lights and me. Oh, say can you see? The nomadic life’s for me!
Who needs a home, when we’re meant to roam?
I’m getting used to a new address. A rather large one I confess. Some people call it the Wilderness. Wandering free… Stars, and traffic lights and me. Oh, say can you see? The nomadic life’s for me!
Red River valley (Traditional)
From this valley the say you are going. We will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile. For they say you are taking the sunshine that has brightened our pathways a while.
Come and sit by my side, if you love me. Do not hasten to bid me adieu. Just remember the Red River valley, and the cowboy who loved you so true.
I’ve been thinking a long time my darling of the sweet words you never would say. Now alas, must my fond hopes all vanish? For they say you are going away.
Come and sit by my side, if you love me. Do not hasten to bid me adieu. Just remember the Red River valley, and the cowboy who loved you so true.
Royal wedding
Baby baby, I don’t know the future, like talking heads and hoochie-coochers. I’m turning off the Weather Channel; I put on a shirt of flannel.
Baby baby I’m coming over. I got a box of Russell-Stover. A wedding ring is waiting for your finger. Come on, baby let’s hire a singer for our royal wedding, for our royal wedding. It goes on…
So let’s take out the mini-van with the kiddies and your Old Man. We’ll drive away in a wheel of fire. I think I hear an angelic choir from our royal wedding, our royal wedding. It goes on…
Victory song
Two lovers make promises they can’t understand. But they know they’re in love, and with God’s grace they can. So they say the right words, and exchange wedding bands. And victory follows them home. Hey, hey, victory follows you home. Hey, hey, victory follows you home.
A little boy walks on the ice with his dad. He starts a-sliding, so they go hand in hand. And just for a moment they conquer the land. And victory follows them home. Hey, hey, victory follows you home. Hey, hey, victory follows you home.
We all showed up at the wake of a man, whose widow, it turned out, was his biggest fan. Her tears mixed with joy, with joy as they ran. And victory followed him home. Hey, hey, victory follows you home. Hey, hey, victory follows you home.
Walk in the field
You got to walk in the field. You got to face the rising sun. You got to feel the wind of God,
because there’s only one. You gotta crawl to your lover, and say, “We’ve got to be healed.” And say a prayer to the Blessed Mother, oh, when we walk in the field.
You’ve got to jump on a rusty tractor, and grind through the gears of life.
You got to know what the hell you’re after, and run away from the lies, yes you do. You gotta crawl to your lover, and say, “We’ve got to be healed.” And say a prayer to the Blessed Mother, oh, when we walk in the field.
When I paint my masterpiece (Dylan)
Oh, the streets of Rome are filled with rubble. Ancient footprints are everywhere. You can almost think that you’re seein’ double on a cold, dark night on the Spanish Stairs. Got to hurry on back to my hotel room, where I’ve got me a date with Botticelli’s niece. She promised that she’d be right there with me when I paint my masterpiece.
Oh, the hours I’ve spent inside the Coliseum, dodging lions and wastin’ time. Oh, those mighty kings of the jungle, I couldn’t stand to see ’em. Yes, it sure has been a long, hard climb. Train wheels runnin’ through the back of my memory, as the daylight hours do retreat. Someday, everything will be smooth like a rhapsody when I paint my masterpiece.
I left Rome and landed in Brussels, with a picture of a tall oak tree by my side. Clergymen in uniform and young girls pullin’ mussels. Everyone was there, but nobody tried to hide. Newspapermen eating candy, had to be held down by big police. Someday, everything is gonna be different when I paint my masterpiece.
